St. Louis 6, Houston 0, 4th inning

9:16: If Red Sox go on to make the playoffs, the double play Marco Scutaro just started by flipping the ball with his glove to Dustin Pedroia may go down in team lore alongside the Dave Roberts stolen base of the 2004 playoffs. Superb play, and Pedroia's turn at second was just as brilliant.

9:14: Phillies are mixing in starting pitchers in relief roles to give them some work -- Hamels followed Blanton and now Worley is in -- but they've kept the position players in the game. O'Flaherty replaces Hudson in the seventh.

9:06: MLB Network says Chris Carpenter is 50-0 in his career when given a five-run lead. No word on his record with a six-run lead when he also drives in a run, but you get the idea.

9:04: In his last two outings in a winless September, David Price allowed 10 earned runs in 10 innings, hardly what you'd expect from a staff ace.

8:57: Lester gets out of a tense fifth thanks to shortstop Marco Scutaro throwing out Mark Reynolds at the plate trying to score from third on a grounder with the infield in.

8:40: The Red Sox can personally thank Mark Teixeira if they make the playoffs. The Yankees slugger hit his second home run of the evening to extend their lead over the Rays 6-0. In Baltimore, Dustin Pedroia hit a long ball himself. Red Sox 3, Orioles 2.

8:34: The Yankees trio of Dellin Betances, George Kontos, Aaron Laffey have held the Rays to just one hit through three innings. Not the same ring as CC Sabathia, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera.

8:27: Final toll: Cardinals 5 runs, seven hits on 41 pitches by Astros pitcher Brett Myers in first inning. Doesn't look likely Myers will win his fifth straight game in September. Braves, up 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, better get some insurance runs.

8:20: Simon balks tying run home. Red Sox 2, Orioles 2 in fourth.

8:17: Cardinals all over Brett Myers, scoring three runs in first inning. Two runners on base and still nobody out.

8:14: Price has thrown 80 pitches and has yet to get out of the third. This will turn into a bullpen game for the Rays soon.

8:06: Hardy's towering homer to left puts Orioles ahead 2-1 in third.

8:04: Uggla's two-run homer gives Braves a big lift right after Bourn gets caught stealing.

7:55: Teixeira grand slam puts Yankees up 5-0 and evokes a small ovation from Red Sox fans watching the game and the scoreboard at Camden Yards.

7:50.: Red Sox start peppering Simon, laying off the breaking ball and jumping on his fastball. Pedroia RBI single puts Boston ahead 1-0 in third.

7:40: Ben Zobrist had made just five errors in 130 games at second base this season before booting that routine Cano grounder that allowed the Yankees to score in the first.

7:29: The same way shutdown innings have a big psychological impact on teams to keep momentum, responding right away after falling behind has the same effect, so it was important for the Braves to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

7:25: Jon Lester was 0-3 with a 10.54 ERA in his last three starts, but he looks sharp in the first inning despite allowing an opposite-field double to J.J. Hardy.

7:19.: Ryan Howard slices a single to left field to put Phillies up 1-0 in first inning. Bad omen for a team like Atlanta that has to be doubting itself.

7:18: Simon works around walk to David Ortiz by getting Adrian Gonzalez to ground out.

7:01: Hudson is 9-3 w/ a 1.99 ERA and .194 opp. avg. in his past 16 home starts, including 4-0 w/ a 1.00 ERA in his past 5.

6:44: 6-foot-8 prospect Dellin Betances to start for the Yankees against Rays.

6:38: The Rays have made up nine games on the Red Sox in the standings since Sept. 3. The Cardinals have made up 10 1/2 on the Braves since Aug. 25.

6:35: Alex Rodriguez was scratched from the Yankees lineup with a sore right knee.

6:25: Red Sox sticking with rookie C Ryan Lavarnway behind plate (2 HRs on Tuesday)

Jefferson, who'll be a senior, has started since the end of his freshman season in 2008

Jefferson, who'll be a senior, has started since the end of his freshman season in 2008, going 20-7. He led LSU to an 11-2 record, including a 41-24 win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl in which he was an efficient 10 of 19 for 158 yards and three touchdowns.

Before the fight, Miles had said repeatedly that Jefferson was the projected starter in 2011, a year when the Tigers have increasingly realistic national title aspirations.

Miles valued Jefferson's versatility. Jefferson's 450 yards rushing last season narrowly eclipsed Nelson Stokely's previous record for an LSU quarterback of 449 yards in 1969. Jefferson's seven touchdowns rushing tied a school record.

Senior quarterback Jarrett Lee has performed well in Jefferson's absence, completing 64 percent of his passes (56 of 87) for 624 yards and six touchdowns. He has thrown just one interception, and LSU is scoring 38.8 points per game.

LSU won each of its four games by double digits, and plays next on Saturday, when the Tigers host Kentucky.

She said District Attorney Hiller Moore has not decided precisely what penalty will be pursued.

"That's not something that we are seeking at this time, to say that we want jail or do not want jail," Burns said. "What we want to do is go through and have a fair presentation of trial and allow the judge to make a fair sentencing at that time."

Attorneys did not discuss details of the grand jury proceedings, which by law must remain confidential.

One of the men who sought treatment after the fight, Andrew Lowery, has accused Jefferson and Johns of beating and kicking him, adding that Jefferson kicked him in the face.

Police responded to the allegations by searching Jefferson and Johns' homes, taking shoes from both, and performing tests for DNA that were inconclusive.

Unglesby decried the police's handling of the matter, which the lawyer said has already caused Jefferson to miss four games.

"I'm surprised really it went as far as it did. If this is what we were going to do, we could have done this three or four weeks ago. We didn't have to go through all of this unnecessary delay," Unglesby said. "If the police would have done what they would do to anybody that would have been named Jordan Jones, which is write him a ticket, and then the DA decided maybe there was something to it.

"They would have been put in pretrial diversion. ... I've been saying all along, you don't give people special treatment by celebrity. You're not supposed to give them bad treatment because of celebrity, and I do think that's what happened."
